Koh Samui, Thailand – June 2008 – After successfully opening X2 Kui Buri in 2007, X2 Resorts (pronounced “Cross Two”), Thailand’s first chain of designer resorts, finally opened its doors from the latest X2 Resort; Koh Samui.

Koh Samui Island, the 3rd largest island and one of the most famous beach destinations in Thailand, is becoming increasingly popular for luxurious resorts.

The management team and owner; Astudo Hotel & Resort Management; is holding hands with LIFESTYLEHOTELS to deliver a unique experience of “luxury by design”.

Located on the tranquil Beach of Hua Thanon (South of Lamai) on the south-east coast of Koh Samui, X2 Resort overlooks the Gulf of Thailand with 100 meters of private beachfront where 50 year-old trees provide a true X2 atmosphere…designed to satisfy the spirit.

The resort occupies 5 acres (12 Rais / 20,235 sqm) of land embracing 27 unique designer villas:
1 Owner’s Villa
1 Suite Pool Villa
21 Pool Villas
4 Garden Bungalows

The villas range from 110 to 225 sqm with pools of approximately 30 sqm.

Each designer styled private villa features a spacious private terrace, a garden patio, entertainment including a home theatre/ DVD/ LCD with satellite TV, a movie and music library, a selection of magazines and of course free high speed WiFi internet access throughout the resort.

X2 Samui is also equipped with its popular X2 Spa and an impressive outdoor massage pavilion to deliver a combination of traditional massages and spa treatments.

As well as in every other X2 Resort, the well known 4K restaurant and bar (pronounced “fork”) which provides a ‘mix & match’ of eastern and western dishes and the best of fusion, will ensure that every single guest never gets bored. Local products in season and organic ingredients do dominate the menu.

According to Astudo CEO and co-owner Anthony McDonald X2 Samui is truly a totally unique resort. “It is the kind of resort that guests do not want to leave. The service is of course 5-star and the private villas are a sublime relaxing oasis. X2 Resorts – Thailand’s first chain of design resorts and hotels
Tuesday July 29th 2008, 3:52 pm

Launching in 2007, X2 Resorts (pronounced “cross-two”) is Thailand’s first chain of design resorts and hotels.

The X2 owners recognized that those individuals who appreciate style and design were becoming less satisfied with the traditional tropical resort designs that, while well executed, proliferate the Asian region.

Not only where resorts (large and small) becoming more and more similar, but the service and product experience was becoming increasingly expected, undifferentiated and generally unrewarding from an emotional and spiritual perspective.

X2 was determined to not only break out from the traditional design concept of tropical resorts in the region but also redefine luxury in completely new terms, and cross to (X2) a new dimension of luxury…designed for the spirit

As a brand, X2 Resorts have a very unique and unequivocal persona that is embraced by all elements of the resort. Whether it is design, service, location…..X2 resorts will always exhibit:

Soulful…tranquility; that provides sensual pleasures and thoughtfulness
Freedom…of space, process and rules; allowing guests  to set their own agenda
Simplicity…in form and service; completely understated and unfussed

All X2 Resorts are designed and built with a primary goal that they must “satisfy the spirit”. This is partly achieved via architectural design, but more importantly through natural beauty of the location and the meshing of the structures with the canvas provided by nature. To achieve this goal, the design of resorts is underpinned by several important X2 characteristics of:

-    Simplicity in style
-    Invisibility of design
-    Privacy without isolation
-    Natural articulation of structure
-    Homogeneous execution with the environment

A design resort of more than just beautiful, high quality architecture…it is also about its integration with quality of service…but of an untraditional nature. Many luxury hotels are guilty of assuming that more is better, and that the lower staff bow is indicative of the quality of service. X2 resort clients see through such false and largely unnecessary fuss. Instead, X2 resorts deliver service that is:

-    Unobtrusive and unrestricting
-    Friendly, informal and social
-    Provides variety and choice
-    Value and rewarding

Resorts by X2 appeal to people who appreciate style in a genuine, pure sense. Almost an anti-brand; X2 does what large hotel chains cannot do, and a lot of that comes back to being human and unpretentious.

Whether it is design or service, X2 executes new ideas, not for the sake of it, but to deliver a unique sensual experience that is becoming so increasingly difficult to find. An experience that feeds the soul and rewards the senses in a down to earth way. X2 guests are not pretenders, nor out to impress. They are drawn to X2 because it is real, unique, and stylish and relaxed…just like them.

The first X2 resort is at Kui Buri. Kui Buri is a 3 hour drive south of Bangkok, and half an hour south of the famous beachside resort town of Hua Hin – where the Thai royal family frequently resides.

The general area is underdeveloped and peaceful with the only communities being local fishing villages. The resort is located on virgin beachfront land covering over 8 acres (12 Rai). The 23 semi private villas each have their own terrace, garden and private pools. The existing landscape of large well developed trees was kept, and provides a unique atmosphere punctuated by large open spaces and unique natural horticulture.

The challenge was to create identical villas that can each provide a unique experience. To answer this interesting challenge the orientation of the villa relative to its terrace, pool, garden area are different for each unit. This provides a unique experience and outlook even though the villa construction is actually identical.

The idea for the use of stones comes from the seasonal appearance of sea pebbles that find them self scattered along the beach during winter months.  The “mountain rock” used throughout the resort are all from local quarries. The external stone walls of the Villas appear as wall and not as a building, creating an invisibility of design. What is a structural wall for one villa appears as a fence wall to other villa. By using this invisible wall design and clever landscaping; villas are private without the need to be encased in four high fences. This reduces construction costs and importantly allows cool sea breezes to pass through the villa area with minimal disruption. It provides privacy without isolation.

The boardwalk arrangement was developed from a maze, where a journey is an experience of unknowns…with each turn of a corner uncovering a new visual experience.

Lighting throughout the resort is also invisible. The general areas have a soft hidden lighting whereby structure is illuminated without being obviously lit.

All X2 Resorts have their signature 4K restaurant (pronounced “fork”) and bar. The restaurant menu is a mix of eastern and western dishes and the best of fusion. Local products in season tend to dominate the menu, which is prepared by our international chef. Great food and wine is a hall mark at X2 so guests can be assured that their stay will also be a culinary delight.

X2 will be opening similar resorts in Koh Samui (Summer 08) and in Koh Kood (late 09).

Le Bayburi De Pran – Chic Luxury Beachfront Villas opens in Pranburi, Thailand
Tuesday July 29th 2008, 3:50 pm

The Le Bayburi De Pran Villas is a unique development consisting of 4 private villa residences situated along a stretch of Pranburi beachfront that is home to over a dozen high end boutique resorts.

The Villas are completely furnished, and completely independent, with their own utilities, pool, parking, kitchen etc…the only thing they share is the beautiful beachfront on their door step.

Although each Villa is structurally almost identical, the interior and landscape designs are each unique. There are four interior designs developed by international interior design firm DWP (Cityspace); Mediterranean Retreat, Pacific Hideaway, Modern Tropical and Scandinavian Vacation.

Mediterranean Retreat - Designed in an award winning Mediterranean theme, this villa is romantic, comfortable and completely relaxing. Guests enjoy a feeling that unique to the region, adding to what will no doubt be an experience of a lifetime.

Pacific Hideaway - Pacific Hideaway villa is inspired from pacific island and northern Australian beachfront homes. The villa has a warm natural feel to it, with an island hideaway feeling that supports a relaxing and private vacation break. Like all the villas, the Pacific Hideaway is directly on the beachfront, with absolutely uninterrupted views from almost every area of the villa and outdoor areas.

Modern Tropical - A more traditional Asian tropical design so popular in the regional is reflected in the contemporary design of this villa. For those guests who either haven’t experienced that Asian tropical experience or enjoy this style of accommodation, then this villa is one of the best you will ever find. Very much in keeping with the surrounding area and resorts the tropical feeling of the villa is only further improved by the glorious outdoor living areas and absolute beach frontage enjoyed from every area of the villa.

Scandinavian Vacation - For those people who want a completely new vacation experience, this beachfront villa is decorated in a blend of modern and traditional Scandinavian material and furniture. It provides a refreshing change for those people who are looking for something different in terms of a vacation experience. The design makes the most of the indoor – outdoor living area, and the fabulous ocean views from all areas of the villa.

Each Villa has 3 full size bedrooms and a third study with sofa bed providing comfortable sleeping accommodation for 7-8 people. The 50 sqm private pool and spa lead directly to the sun deck and living and dining areas. This indoor – outdoor living provides a truly relaxing way to enjoy a luxury beachside vacation. Equipped with LCD TVs, CD/DVD players, wireless ADSL internet, cable TV, full kitchen appliances, microwave, refrigerator with basic supplies, bathroom amenities, bicycles, alarm system and 24 hour security service, the Villa has all the advantages of staying in a private home, but with the maid services of a luxury hotel. This allows guests and friends to enjoy not only a fantastic social atmosphere by the sea, but also a relaxing escape from the metropolis.

The private Villas have approximately 380 sqm of useable space, including both air-conditioning and outdoor living areas. The beachfront is literally right at the front of the Villas, with no public walkways or roads between the Villas and the beach. Between the villas and the beachfront is a grassed private strip, where guests can sunbath, eat, drink, relax and take in the sea breeze. The total site area is approximately 1 Rai (about 1,600 sqm), with each villa occupying about 400 sqm.

Romantic Pranburi is located just 20 minutes south of Hua-Hin, situated on the south west coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Here you will discover a tranquil, luxurious and private atmosphere. The area is characterized by crystal clean natural beaches, breathtaking sea views, refreshing sea breezes and all this set against a backdrop of inland mountain ranges. Home to many famous boutique resorts and spas your beachfront is shared with the likes of Aleenta Resort & Spa, Hua Plee Lazy Beach and Praseban Resort to name a few.

Pranburi is unique in that it has only boutique private resorts along the beachfront, so even in high season the area is peaceful and quiet. At the same time it is only a short drive to golf courses and tourist sites, and only a stroll along to beach to any of a dozen restaurants.

Located close to the beautiful mountains of Sam Roi Yod National Park and six world class golf courses, Pranburi represents that hard to find private luxury.

Pranburi is easily accessible by car from Bangkok, with only a 2.5 – 3 hour drive. There are numerous tourist buses and vans going to the area from both the city and the airports. Car rentals and shuttle transport is available from any location upon request. The closest domestic airport is Hua Hin, which is about 20 minutes drive.

Away Resort Koh Kood in Thailand launches their ‘Slow Tourism’ Concept
Tuesday July 29th 2008, 3:47 pm

What is slow tourism?

The underlying concept of Slow Tourism is to reduce the “volume” of experiences on a vacation, and instead focus on the “quality” of experiences. It is about slowing the pace of a holiday down so you have the opportunity to interact with the people and places you experience, instead of just trying see and do as much as possible in the amount of time available.

The opportunity to interact and “connect” with people on a deeper level is much more rewarding and memorable than just taking a million pictures of well known land marks. By slowing down you have the chance to explore beyond the normal scenes, and scratch beneath the tourist façade that plasters the world.

More and more people want to have a unique story of their vacation, and this is not possible on typical holiday itinerary. Slow tourism allows holiday goers the chance to not only have a relaxing and stress free vacation, but also one that is a deeper and more rewarding experience.
Often it is the unplanned that is more memorable then the planned. Slow Tourism allows a flexible program of travel that is more akin to exploring. This facilitates unplanned experiences, which are usually unique and also provide truer insights into the local culture.

Our time is ruled by speed, all interactions have to happen quicker and quicker, in real time: high speed internet connections, high speed trains, fast food…but this constant rushing provokes stress, an unknown disease 50 years ago, and today in most of the Third World countries.

In this hectic panorama, the need for slowness is becoming stronger and stronger and more people choose to slow down to spend quality free time rediscovering the natural rhythm of things, listening and observing small treasures off the beaten tracks, trying to understand the spirit of places and the fragile balance with their people.

Slow Tourist philosophy and mission; as a Brand, we aim to promote this area and a different way of being a tourist. Travel slow, live the places, not consume them.

Slow is not a synonym of lazy, and that is why we offer many different options for active holidays, the best way to appreciate local food and culture and nature; various possibilities for your holidays in the mountains or seaside, away from the stress and the noise of the city, to regenerate the body and the spirit, whether you are a sporty person or simply somebody who knows how to enjoy a beautiful landscape.
